Strengthening Bonds Through Gratitude: Building Connection This Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving isn't just about food; it's a time to deepen connections with loved ones. As Thanksgiving approaches, it's an opportunity to turn appreciation into action through meaningful conversations and shared traditions. Let's explore how we can keep the gratitude practice alive at the table and beyond.

Welcome to Car Ride Conversations for Sports Families

I’m Valerie Alston, your host, here to help parents and young athletes spark meaningful dialogue about mental toughness, resilience, and confidence. Whether you're headed to practice, a game, or just running errands, this podcast serves as your go-to for building stronger relationships and lifelong skills—one car ride at a time. Let's dive in.

Thanksgiving Plans and Gratitude Practice

Happy Thanksgiving week! I hope your plans are coming together. I’m hosting Thanksgiving for my family, a tradition since I moved back from Germany. My house will be full of family and even some dogs, creating a boisterous environment filled with love and gratitude.

Hopefully, you tuned into last week’s episode and practiced the "three good things" exercise. If not, it’s available to listen to and offers insights into building gratitude. Reflecting on good things over seven days can change your mood, motivation, and interactions with others. For instance, an athlete might realize the appreciation in your mom’s car rides to practice, which are crucial before reaching driving age.

Learning from the Army's Gratitude Practice

My experience with the Army involved teaching leaders resilience through a practice we called "hunt the good stuff." Soldiers shared their good things daily, and over time, their sharing evolved from surface-level appreciation to deeper, more meaningful connections. Witnessing this transformation over almost 15 years has highlighted how shared gratitude can foster lasting bonds and friendships.

Sharing Gratitude at Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving offers the perfect opportunity to evoke gratitude conversations with family and friends. Discuss favorite traditions or stories from past Thanksgivings to keep the gratitude spirit alive. Reflect on people who have made a difference in your life this year, sharing your appreciation during dinner.

Consider how you can extend the gratitude practice beyond Thanksgiving. Create a ritual, such as a gratitude jar, a family group text, or a weekly recap of good news. Gratitude sustains motivation and perspective on life, helping to balance the negativity bias we all experience.

Conversation Prompts for Thanksgiving

Here are some prompts to initiate gratitude conversations during Thanksgiving:

1. What did you notice or learn from last week’s gratitude practice?
2. Who is someone you want to thank in person this week, and how might you do it?
3. What Thanksgiving tradition or moment makes you feel most grateful?
4. How can you incorporate gratitude into your family routine beyond the holiday?
